The Black King is the apparent leader of the Offscourings. He claims that he once tried to "save" humans but he has since shifted his agenda towards nonhumans after humans "denied" his efforts. He possesses healing powers and is shown to have a circular wound on his hand. His identity has yet to be established, however, it has been hinted that he may be Jesus Christ. In Chapter 20, for example, the Black King calls upon his soldiers to "strangle the fig tree before it can bear fruit." The scene may be an indirect reference to Matthew 21:18-22, in which Jesus curses a fig tree to wither when he finds it has beared no fruit.
